First, we read The Mitten and The Hat and compared the two, We also used puppet to retell each story. We built snowman sight words, matched mitten letters, and spelled sight words using play-do. At teacher station, we read a book filled with -at words and reviewed for this week's PALs testing.
For nonstandard measuring, we read Measuring Penny's World. Thsi book goes through all types of measuring and is a great intro to what measuring really is and different things we can measure. We also learned how to measure using paperclips (a non-standard unit) and students did very well with this!
FOr winter, we read Bear Snores On. This book talks about a bear in hibernation while all of his other friends have a party because they do not hibernate. We used this to discuss the difference between hibernation and migration. We even discussed how Miss George would LOVE to migrate during the winter because she DOES NOT like snow :) We also talked about snow and painted with "snow paint" (thanks to Oliver's dad for helping with this!) and made snowflakes. Finally we had a "winter clothes relay". Here, two students were chosen to be the "models" (aka wear my winter clothes from home). Their styling team had to put the winter clothes on them in the right order. This required a lot of teamwork and produced A LOT of laughs!
We wrapped up Friday with stations and prize box. I introduced two new stations! We had legos (thanks to Noble's family!) and experimented with magnets. These were a big hit!
As I'm writing this, we have already been out of school for 2 days due to snow! Honestly hoping to see those smiling faces tomorrow!
WIth love,
Miss George
